"I am the greatest!"

by Alberto Fumi
swimming writer, La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy

Federica Pellegrini won everything that was to be won, with her uplifting victories she also won the hearts of the Roman crowd, earned the respect of teammates and never settled for less than her very best.

Her amazing performances at a home World Championships in Rome promoted her to the status of superstar, five years after she made herself known with a silver medal in the 200m freestyle at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games when just 16. In between there was Olympic gold in the 200m in Beijing. Used to being in the limelight, Pellegrini is bathed in it eternally in Italy after her exploits in the Eternal City.
